Accepting God’s gift of new life has nothing to do with your good actions in the past or your ability to do better on your own in the future. Rather, it has everything to do with the fact that Jesus paid the penalty for your sins past, present, and future when he went to the cross and died in your place.
In the ancient city of Philippi, a jailer was confronted with God’s power and his own need and he cried out to the apostle Paul (who was his prisoner), “What must I do to be saved?” Paul’s response was amazingly short and simple. He said, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and you will be saved.”6
The late Billy Graham helped countless people take this step. If you could ask him how to put your faith in Jesus, he would tell you to simply talk to God from your heart saying something like this: “Dear God, I know I am a sinner and that I have rebelled against you with my thoughts and my actions. I come to you now and ask you to forgive me and to give me new and eternal life. I believe that Jesus is your Son and that He died in my place and was raised to life again. I accept your gift of new life and thank you for your love and mercy to accept a rebel such as me. I place my life in your hands and ask that, from this moment forward, you will remake me from the inside out and help me to live according to your will and ways. Thank you for accepting me just as I am and promising to make me into who you intended me to be. In the name of Jesus I pray. Amen”
